Leadership is not just about where you stand—it’s about where you are willing to step in and learn. For David Farrakhan and JoAnna Farrakhan, the start of this year marked a meaningful commitment to deeper community engagement through two powerful initiatives rooted in service, understanding, and advocacy.
In January, they began the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Citizens Police Academy, followed by the start of their journey in February with the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program—each experience intentionally chosen to expand their impact and connection to the community they serve.
January: Understanding Through the Citizens Police Academy
The LVMPD Citizens Police Academy is a 12-week immersive program designed to give community members a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement—how it operates, the challenges officers face, and the systems in place to protect and serve.
By stepping into this program, David and JoAnna made a conscious decision to gain firsthand knowledge—not from the outside looking in, but from within the experience itself.
This journey reflects a commitment to:
-
Building stronger relationships between community and law enforcement
-
Increasing transparency and understanding
-
Becoming more informed leaders in matters of public safety
It’s about listening, learning, and showing up with intention.
February: Advocating Through CASA
In February, that commitment expanded into advocacy with the start of the CASA Program, focused on supporting foster youth within the court system.
CASA volunteers are trained to be consistent, trusted voices for children navigating some of life’s most challenging circumstances. Beginning this journey means stepping into spaces where compassion, accountability, and advocacy are not optional—they are essential.
For David and JoAnna, this aligns deeply with their work through Strength and Flight, where foster youth remain a core focus in creating pathways toward stability, support, and opportunity.
A Purposeful Start to the Year
Starting both programs back-to-back was not by chance—it was by design.
Together, these experiences represent a balanced approach to leadership:
-
Understanding systems (law enforcement and public safety)
-
Advocating for individuals (foster youth and vulnerable populations)
-
Bridging gaps between institutions and the communities they serve
It’s a reminder that effective leadership requires both knowledge and heart.
Leading by Example
Through their continued work with the Armed Forces Chamber, Strength and Flight, and Ephraims David Las Vegas, USA, David and JoAnna consistently lead from the front—stepping into programs, conversations, and initiatives that allow them to better serve others.
This is what it looks like to not just talk about change—but to actively prepare for it.
Closing Reflection
Every journey begins with a decision.
A decision to learn.
A decision to serve.
A decision to be present where it matters most.
January and February marked the beginning of something deeper—an intentional path toward stronger advocacy, greater understanding, and continued impact in the Las Vegas community.
And this is only the start.
